Staff Spotlight: Karin Kauffman, VP of Sales for Life Sciences

As radiation research and cancer biology reach new horizons, pre-clinical investigation is increasingly important. Xstrahl’s research systems support life science investigators, radiobiologists, radiation oncologists, radiation physicists, and many other disciplines in a variety of research initiatives, including pancreatic cancer, lung cancer, and prostate cancer studies.

One thing that sets Xstrahl apart is our understanding of both the clinical and research sides of radiation. Through community, knowledge, and innovation, we will do everything we can to assist researchers to the best of our abilities. To this end, we are delighted to welcome Karin Kauffman to our research division, who joins Xstrahl with a combination of both clinical and research experience – making her an excellent addition to our team to best support the entire radiation research community.

What will you be doing at Xstrahl?

As VP of Sales for Life Sciences, I will be responsible for identifying and partnering with oncology researchers in both the academic and pharma/biotech arenas – primarily in the United States and Canada. I have a clinical background as a radiation therapist, formerly working with Yale New Haven Hospital. I also have a deep background in business development. This combination puts me in the unique position of being able to understand the needs and barriers of research teams and more deeply support clients in identifying which of Xstrahl’s products and services are most appropriate for their diverse radiation research interests.

Tell us more about your background in oncology?

Besides radiation therapy, my oncology experience extends to diagnostic and therapeutic modalities. I formerly served as Head of Personalized Oncology at Champions Oncology, where I expanded use of PDX models into the clinical setting. I am excited to apply my prior experience and training in radiation therapy and PDX models specifically to supporting clients at Xstrahl.

What motivates you to work with the radiation research community?

Xstrahl is a leader in the field of preclinical radiation research. As I learned more and more about the depth of all the research being performed using the Small Animal Radiation Research Platform (SARRP) and Xstrahl’s cabinet irradiators, I wanted to be a part of the community. Xstrahl’s team is experienced and fully dedicated to extending the use of radiation – not just to help eradicate cancer but also for many other translational research purposes. The value of the combined research effort is impressive and something I want to be a part of building and supporting. From a personal perspective, I believe everyone has been touched by cancer, either directly or indirectly. This is an area which I am most passionate about, and I know others at Xstrahl feel the same. I look forward to working and collaborating with oncology researchers as well as my fellow coworkers, who all hold the mission true to heart.

What can you be found doing outside of work?

When not working, I enjoy taking walks with our golden retriever, socializing with friends and neighbors, and spending time with my 18-year-old son who is a singer/songwriter (unbelievably, he still comes to me for my opinion on his songs)!
